Maldives Coral Reef Assessment

​ޖަނަވަރީ 2020 ގައި ނޫ ރާއްޖެއިންވަނީ ފަރުތަކުގެ ދިރުމާއި، މަސްމަހާމެއްސާއި، ކަނޑުގެ އެންމެ އަޑީގެ ދިރުންތަކާއި، ލޮނުގަނޑުގެ ކޮލިޓީ ހިމެނޭހެން ރާއްޖޭގެ ފަރުތަކުގެ ހާލަތު ދެނެގަތުމަށްޓަކައި މުޅި ރާއްޖޭގައި ދިރާސާކުރުމަށް އެކްސްޕެޑިޝަނެއް ކުރިއަށް ގެންގޮސްފައިއެވެ. މިއީ މޯލްޑިވްސް މެރިން ރިސާޗް އިންސްޓިޓިއުޓާއި، ވެއިޓް އިންސްޓިޓިއުޓާއި، ސްކްރިޕްސް އިންސްޓިޓިއުޝަން  އޮފް  އޯޝަނަގްރަފީ ގުޅިގެން ރާއްޖޭގެ ކަނޑުފަޅުގެ މާހައުލުގެ ހާލަތު އިތުރަށް ދެނެގަތުމަށް ހިންގުނު އެކްސްޕެޑިޝަނެކެވެ. މި ދިރާސާއިން އެއްކުރެވުނު މައުލޫމާތަކީ ރާއްޖޭގެ ކަނޑުފަޅު ބޭނުންކުރާގޮތުގެ ޕްލޭން ތައްޔާރުކުުރުމަށާއި، ދިވެހިން ނުހަނު ބޮޑަށް ބަރޯސާވާ ކަނޑުފަޅުގެ ވަސީލަތްތައް ހިމާޔާތްކޮށް ރައްކާތެރިކުރުމަށް ދުރު ރާސްތާގެ ޕްލޭނެއް އެކުލަވައިލުމަށް އެހީތެރިވެދޭނެ މައުލޫމާތަށެވެ.

ދިވެހި ސަރުކާރާއި މޯލްޑިވްސް މެރިން ރިސާރޗް އިންސްޓިޓިއުޓުން މިހާތަނަށް ފުޅާ ދާއިރާއެއްގައި ކޮށްފައިވާ ދިރާސާތަކުގެ މައްޗައް ބިނާކޮށް، މި އެކްސްޕެޑިޝަންގައި 26 ދުވަހުގެ ތެރޭގައި ޖުމްލަ 16 އަތޮޅެއްގެ ދިރާސާތައް ފުރިހަމަކުރެވުނެވެ.

މީގެ އިތުރުން 2021 ވަނަ އަހަރުގެ ކުރީކޮޅު ވަނީ މިފަދަ ދެވަނަ އެކްސްޕެޑިޝަނެއް ކުރިއަށްގެންގޮސް، ރާއްޖޭގެ ފުރަތަމަ އާކިޕެލަގޯ ވައިޑް އެސެސްމަންޓް ފުރިހަމަކުރެވިފައެވެ.

THE EXPEDITION

WHERE DID THE EXPEDITION GO?

The 2020 Maldives Coral Reef Assessment surveyed the coral reefs and fish populations across the northern and central atolls of the Maldives.

 

The 2021 Maldives Coral Reef Assessment Report surveyed sites in North and South Male and the Southern Atolls.

SURVEY METHODS

The research team surveyed 177 sites spanning 20 atolls across two expeditions.

 

Survey sites were strategically selected across inhabited, uninhabited, and resort islands to examine how different levels of human activity impact reef health.

 

To gain a detailed understanding of coral reef health, scientists collected data across six key areas:

KEY FINDINGS

Comparisons with past studies indicate that Maldivian reefs may be following a recovery trajectory similar to the post-1998 bleaching event, offering encouraging signs for long-term reef resilience.

 

  • Following the 2016 bleaching event, leeward fore reefs show high turf algae cover, moderate coral and crustose coralline algae (CCA) cover, and very low macroalgae cover.

  • Coral communities were dominated by stress-tolerant Porites corals and showed strong recruitment of new corals.

  • Fish populations were dominated by high abundances of smaller planktivores and moderate abundances of large herbivores. 

  • Top predators and sharks were scarce on both reefs and pelagic waters. 

 

These findings can help us understand how Maldivian reefs respond to stress and inform efforts to enhance reef resilience in the face of future climate impacts.
